Other Candida species make up the rest of the yeast infections. Candida species can be present in healthy women in the vagina without causing any symptoms. In fact, it is estimated that 20% to 50% of women already have Candida in the vagina. For an infection to occur, the normal balance of yeast and bacteria is disrupted, allowing excessive growth of the yeast. While yeast can spread through sexual contact, vaginal yeast is not considered a sexually transmitted disease as it can also occur in women who are not sexually active, as yeast can be present in the vagina of healthy women.

Yeast Candida is a normal resident of the mouth, gut and vagina that usually does not cause any damage. Under certain conditions, however, Candida can proliferate on the mucous membranes and wet areas of the skin.
